Bled: Slovenia's Secret

Known as being one of the main vacation destinations for Slovenians, or former Yugoslavians, this city and lake is a well kept secret, one which tourists are catching on to. It was once the summer residence of Tito, and today his home is a hotel. Today, this lake is a great place for a swim or a calming boat ride. Here are some great things to do in the city.

10. Postojna Caves: Slovenia is known for having an abundance of caves and people love exploring these places. These huge caves outside the city are incredibly impressive and locals and tourists love visiting them. So if you're looking for a little adventure, these caves are for you.

9. Triglav National Park: just outside of the city of Bled is Triglav National Park, a beautiful park on the border with Austria in the mountains. This park is accessible for people of all ages that are at least slightly in shape. The Triglav mountain is the tallest in Slovenia, but the incline is not that steep, which allows for families with children to reach the summit. There are also plenty of other activities, such as white water rafting and hang-gliding.

8. Tito's Tea Room: this tea room belonging to the former communist dictator of Yugoslavia gives a fantastic view of the lake. Once Tito's vacation home, he preferred to take tea above the lake with a fantastic view. Head here if you want to admire a communist vacation home and have one of the best views of the church, the lake, and the castle.

7. Hiking: this is one of the favorite pastimes of the people of Slovenia. There are plenty of trails around the lake and in the surrounding mountains, so there is plenty to be discovered. The hike around the lake is relaxed and beautiful.

6. Church of the Assumption: Slovenia only has one island, and on this island in the middle of the lake is the Church of the Assumption. The story goes that if you ring the bell three times, your wish will come true because the bell is blessed by the Pope. I made my wish, but I have to wait a little longer to see if it comes true.

5. Straza Bled: in the winter, this park is a ski resort, but it is also open in the summer. It is a small toboggan slide down the hill, looking over the lake. You take the ski lift up and then slide your way back down. If you want a unique and fun way to admire the view of the beautiful lake, this is a great activity!

4. Bled Castle: up upon the hill, looking over the lake, is the Bled Castle. You can head inside to check out some ancient Slovenian culture, or walk around the walls and admire the view of lake Bled from above. Just beware that the castle is a steep climb and 10 euros to even enter the city walls.

3. Bled Island: the Church of the Assumption stands upon this island, but this tiny island on a lake offers other things to see and do. The small cafe is known for the best cake in town and also the best cake in the region. It is not a sweet cake, but the people of the region love it and are proud of it. You can take a local boat to the island or you can rent your own and row your way around the lake.

2. Vintgar Gorge: this gorge outside the city is beautiful because the water is a run off from the Alps, so it is very pure. Although it may be a bit scary walking on old planks across the gorge, the views are amazing and worth the trip! Don't miss the waterfalls at the end.

1. Lake Bled: this beautiful lake is the reason why the city is so famous. With beautiful blue water surrounded by so many green trees, it is absolutely relaxing. Whether you want to swim, row, or hike, there are plenty of activities. Otherwise just lounge around and enjoy the view and the sun.
