The 10 Best Things to See in Avignon
Avignon: A City for the Popes
Avignon has been on my bucket list for a very long time. At one point during history, the popes stayed in Avignon rather than Rome. So of course I had to visit it. And while I loved the history, it was a nice change of pace to be in a smaller southern city and to just stop and smell the roses. So here are the top ten things to do in Avignon.10. Food: this area is France is known for its great food and it is a must try when in Avignon. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and even the grocery stores carry typical foods of the region. Make sure to take the time to eat something from Provence.
9. Musée Calvet: this small museum packs quite the collection. If your looking for some things to see, this museum not only has some things from Avignon, it has some Egyptian art.

8. Walk by the lavender shops: Avignon is in Provence, which is known for its lavender. So in parts of the city there are stores that specialize in dried lavender. And walking by them gives your nose a very pleasant surprise.
7. Cathedral Notre Dame des Doms: this cathedral is right next to the Palace of the Popes and can be seen from a variety of different vantage points. And since the popes used to live next door, you know it's going to be beautiful.
6. Rocher des Doms: this park on top of a hill offers what I think is the best view of Avignon. You can see the bridge and the palace as well as a lot of the city. It's nice and peaceful to sit down and admire the view. And it's got some beautiful memorials to soldiers from World War I and World War II.
5. Check out the city walls: one of the great things about this city is that it still has walls all around it, just like in medieval times. You can walk on top of a few of the parts as well.
4. Le Petit Palais: check out this museum if you wanted to see what was inside the palace during the time of the popes. While it's only religious art, it has a lot of beautiful pieces and sculptures.
Le Pont d'Avignon |
2. Le Pont d'Avignon: have you ever heard the song "Sur le Pont d'Avignon?" Well this is the bridge that they're signing about. And while today there is only half of a bridge left, you can still walk on it. So while to many this is just a bridge, it's the history behind it that makes it so great.
1. Le Palais des Papes: this World Heritage site is a must see if you are in Avignon. While the inside it pretty bare today, it is still beautiful, and it's history. This was once the place that the popes resided. And while it was beautiful, it was also a fortress. So take the time to check out this interesting building.
