Drinking in Finland: How Finns Handle Their Alcohol
This time of year, Finns are usually celebrating Vappu, also known as May Day in the English speaking world. They're going a little wild and celebrating the end of winter and graduation season. But this raises the question of what Finns are like when they drink and what are their habits.
Usually when Finns drink, they drink to get tipsy or drunk. I haven't seen any that don't get drunk unless they're over the age of 30. Of course, not every Finn is like this and some don't drink at all. But generally, when at a party, the Finns are drinking and going hard.
But they change personality when they drink. They become much more open and much more relaxed. Their shy personalities melt away and they will tell you their real feelings. It is actually quite funny to witness sometimes because it's like meeting a whole new person. They then begin to tell you how much they love you and how awesome you are.
So when Finns drink, they drink to get drunk. But they turn into these big softies who just tell you how much they love you. So I'm concerned with the quantities that they drink, I do appreciate the niceties. And I always get a good laugh among the Finns.
