The Ferry to Estonia and Finnish Drinking

Party Boat in Finland: A Booze Cruise and a Beer Run

There is this tradition southern Finland where people (young and old) take a ferry to Tallinn to stock up on essentials. See, things in Finland are much more expensive than they are in Estonia. So the cheap ferry ticket is actually a good idea to go stock on essentials. But in the case of Finland, the essentials is alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol. So Finns pack themselves on the boat with their trollies and load up as much as they can carry.

But the adventure doesn't stop there. While heading back from spending a day in Tallinn and stocking up on alcohol for the next few months, they also enjoy the ferry ride home. And by enjoy I mean drink. And by drink I mean drink a lot. Yes, the alcohol run always turns into a booze cruise at the end of the night. There are plenty of things to do on the boat with small dance clubs and plenty of bars.

Of course, not everyone does this. And the drunks are relatively harmless, they usually stick together. But it is amazing to observe that every ferry ride always includes some drinking. I guess it is just tradition to enjoy the ride with one too many Lapin Kulta (Finnish beers).
