Uppsala: A Charming University Town

Not many people think of visiting Uppsala. But being less than an hour away from Stockholm, it is a great day trip. And the city hosts one of the oldest universities in Sweden, so plenty is to be learned in the city. From museums to castles, this peaceful city has plenty of things to do. If not, kick back and relax with all the nature surrounding the city and enjoy the moment. And although the city feels quite small, it is the fourth largest city in Sweden! Nevertheless, here are some great things to do in Uppsala:

City Center Near Fyris River

10. Take a stroll through the city center: like Stockholm, Uppsala has some beautiful buildings. It is a calm city, though still busy with every day activities. If you would like an insight into modern Swedish life, wander around the streets and observe their calm tranquility and the different shops and beautiful blend of parks, castles, and a modern city.

9. Ekoln: in the southernmost suburbs of Uppsala is Lake Ekoln. Heading to this lake offers a relaxing day by the water. Blending peaceful nature and a serene lake, you can't beat the beautiful tranquility that accompanies the region. So if you want a break from the bustling city of Stockholm, or want a unique experience in Uppsala, Ekoln may be the right adventure for you.

8. Gustavianum: this is the oldest building of the university and it is still in use today. But many choose to head here for the museum, which is full of artifacts from the Vikings and the Ancient Egyptians. So if you would like a history lesson, head here for a unique experience.

7. Skokloster Castle: although a little bit outside the city center, this castle by the lake is absolute picturesque. For serene, calm beauty, this castle is a great destination. Blending simple, yet elegant, Swedish architecture with natural beauty, the Skokloster Castle is a beautiful destination outside of the city.

6. Uppsala Cathedral: facing the university is the powerful Cathedral. Its tall spire can be seen from any vantage point of the city, showing the true power of the church. And in complete Scandinavian design, the construction of the church opted for a simple beauty.

5. Stadsträdgården: this wonderful garden in the city center is absolutely enjoyable. Although less green in the winter time, the summer must surely be wonderful. Just along the Fyris river, the park feels like an oasis in the city, with trees, flowers, and a river. It must make a wonderful location for a picnic!

4. University Main Building: walking into the main building of the Uppsala University, you are in awe of the sheer beauty of the building and get the feeling of greatness. Many famous academics and scientists have passed through this university, and you can sense that from the size of the building. With tall ceilings and marble columns, you know that this university is well loved.

3. Gunilla Bell: this bell is on the way up to the castle, almost a halfway point. And its unique structure is what makes it so interesting and beautiful. Although not much information is known about this bell, the view is what makes this a great destination. The view is amazing at sunset as you are greeted with light kissing the rolling green hills and bounces off the beautiful buildings, creating a beautiful blend of architecture and nature.

2. The House of Peace: near the university, this small museum sends a wonderful message. The entrance is free, making a quick stop at the museum worth it. But I highly encourage people to check it out as it details the darker sides of human kind, such as genocide or the bombing of Hiroshima. It also showcases the good deeds of some people. Check it out if you're interested in the promotion of peace and human rights.

1. Uppsala Castle: in the city center, sitting upon a hill, is the Uppsala Castle. Whether or not you want to go inside the castle, it is worth the trek up the hill for the beautiful view of the city. With a mixture of the city center and the university, the view is amazing! Just watch out in the winter as the slope feels more like an ice-skating arena than a paved road!
