Places for First Time Solo Travelers

Great Cities for Beginners

Traveling for the first time is confusing. Traveling for the first time alone is scary yet liberating. My first solo travel experience was in Italy, and it went fairly well, but I've had much better solo travel experiences in other countries. Picking the right city for that big leap is tough. I know that for me I wanted something familiar enough so that I would feel safe and not completely lost. But as time has gone on, I find myself venturing to places that I never imagined going alone. And it turns out those cities are exactly what I was looking for in a solo travel experience. So here are my recommendations for first time solo travels or Europe cities that are great for a solo travel experience.

Tower Bridge, London

London: this city is a great starting point for first time solo travelers. You don't have to worry about not speaking the language and there are plenty of activities. The people are also very friendly and helpful. If you've never been to a big city alone, London is always willing to show you the ropes.

Paris: Paris is perfect for solo travelers. The café lifestyle is perfect for sitting alone and watching the world go by. Most people speak English as long as you say bonjour. And there are so many signs it's hard to get lost. While Parisians aren't as friendly as Londoners, it's still a great place for first timers.

Berlin: I loved this city. People always seemed okay with speaking English and helping out when asked. And there are activities for every interest.

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

Amsterdam: if you want to go to a place where everyone is super nice and always happy to speak English then this is the city for you. It's beautiful and has a large collection. And if you want to partake in activities that may be illegal in other countries, you can do that too.

Brussels: this city also has a few friendly people and a lot of good food. The public transportation is confusing at first with all the trams, but if you invest in a map it's pretty easy from there.

Lisbon: this city on a hill will give you a lot of exercise and a taste of the Mediterranean culture. The people are all very nice and the metro is the cleanest that I've ever seen. Of course like any city it's good to exercise caution, but in general it's a great place to go.

Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna
Vienna: this city instantly became one of my favorites with it's beauty, history, art, and music. It's café lifestyle is great for solo travelers and it has plenty of things to see and do. And the people were pretty nice too.

Prague: this city was love at first sight. It's small enough to walk around everywhere and it's just so pretty. And it's very safe as well. While the language is very hard to understand, most people speak English and it's easy to get around.

  1. That's a really nice selection of cities and I can see why you'd pick them as great places for those who haven't travelled much before and are feeling a bit intimidated. Each of these cities is used to lots of tourist visitors, hopefully most people are friendly enough that they will help a lost stranger, there's lots of great history, culture and sightseeing to do, good food... and they are not too daunting!
