Do's and Don'ts: Glampacking

The Guide to Looking Good While Traveling

So you want to travel light but you don't want to sacrifice any beauty. You don't want to look like a tourist but you don't want to worry about wearing the same thing every day. Basically what you want is a version of glampacking. So how do you pack to look great?

Don't

Don't pack the hair dryer or straightener. I know for some it sounds a bit drastic, but instead try staying in a place where there are dryers that you can rent or use. Or live disconnected from your dryer for a week or two and let your hair be in it's natural state.

Do

Work that up-do. If you're worried about not having that hair dryer or straightener with you, then put your hair up. No need to worry about it. Or braid your hair the night before if you want curly hair that's somewhat tame the next day. Also bring bobby pins for those flyaways. Or wear a hat. If it's summer out it will protect your eyes and if it's winter then it will keep you warm.

Don't

Don't worry about a lot of makeup. I mean it's all about natural beauty, right? I used to be one of those that put on makeup every day while traveling, but I've given up on that now. As long as my skin is clean and my hair is cooperating, I say the day is good enough. But for those that absolutely need makeup, bring eyeliner and mascara and a little lipstick. Keep it simple and classy so you don't have to bring much but you can still wear makeup.

Do

Accessorize. The way to spice up any outfit is with accessories. So bring accessories that could match multiple outfits that would either dress them up or keep them causal. Scarves and necklaces work great as well as earrings. But don't worry about bringing more than three accessories total, too many and they risk of taking up too much space, or worse, get tangled.

Don't

Don't worry about packing tons of clothes. You can do laundry along the way. And if you're worried about wearing the same outfits over and over again, that's what the accessories are for, to change things up.

Do

Pack clothes that go with multiple outfits. Instead of packing 20 different outfits with even more pieces, pack tops that go with multiple different bottoms. That way you're wearing the same thing but it looks different every time. This way you can maximize your wardrobe with bringing as little as possible.

Don't

Don't worry about having a pair of shoes for each day. They say that no matter where you go don't bring more than 3 pairs of shoes. Bring a pair of flats that are really comfortable to walk in. Bring sandals for the hot weather and beach days and boots for the cold weather and snow days. And if you must, bring one pair of heals that go with most your outfits.

Do

Remember that toiletries can be bought in other countries. A lot of products are available all around the world if you use big name brands. If not then research ahead of time the different words for shampoo or skin cream.
